Beautification

Operation Downtown invests in attractive flower planters and planting beds that adorn the downtown streets, as well as hanging flower baskets that grace the East Village and Historic Court District areas. Operation Downtown, along with Des Moines Park and Recreation Department, plant and maintain more than 850 planters each year.

Small Planter Program

Operation Downtown’s small planter program encourages individual companies to invest in beautification by purchasing small planters to place outside their business. Though these planters are smaller in size, they have a big impact on downtown. Operation Downtown and Des Moines Park and Recreation Department staff then install and maintain a summer planting. This unique opportunity encourages smaller businesses to get involved in the beautification of downtown Des Moines at an affordable price.

Large Planter Program

Thanks to Operation Downtown’s large planter program, round precast concrete planters with a patina finish provide the perfect setting for four-season style. The planters are located on downtown sidewalks, and the program encourages additional beautification throughout the year by assisting property owners with funding. Businesses can request to participate in this cost-sharing program by contacting Operation Downtown.
