Quality of Life

D-line Shuttle

Operation Downtown provides substantial financial assistance each year to support the D-line, a free public transit shuttle that runs through downtown Des Moines. The D-Line travels a  loop on Locust Street and Grand Avenue from 17th Street to E. 5th Street. The D-line averages 750 riders each day.

Skywalk Improvements

To make Des Moines’ extensive skywalk system even more user friendly, Operation Downtown is working closely with the City to update signage, add interactive directories with video screens and place signage at additional access points within the skywalk system and at street level.

Transportation Management Association

Operation Downtown funds the Transportation Management Association, also known as Drive Time Des Moines. The program is dedicated to reducing traffic congestion in the greater Des Moines area.  Emphasizing sustainable commute options, Drive Time Des Moines works with employers and employees to implement transit initiatives that will help achieve the overall goal of reducing traffic by 10 percent.

Successful Events Define Downtown

From the Downtown Farmers’ Market to the World Food Festival, thousands of people flock to the central city each year to enjoy a variety of popular events. Operation Downtown plays a key role in helping established events run smoothly and getting new events off to a good start.

Not only does Operation Downtown have a budget to provide financial support for events, but the organization also helps project leaders organize their events, from getting the required permits to keeping the celebrations safe for the people who attend. Operation Downtown’s part-time neighborhood development officer works closely with neighborhood associations and individuals who want to host events downtown. This officer also functions as a liaison to small businesses, providing the first point of contact between Operation Downtown and local companies.
